Update: After a blame game against Pakistan over cross-border terrorism and its links with Taliban insurgents, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has now said that his country would stand by Islamabad in the event of hostilities with any nation including the United States or India. In his interview with the Geo TV channel, he disclosed, “God forbid, if at any time there is a war between Pakistan and America, then we will be with Pakistan.”Asked specifically if Afghanistan would back Pakistan if it was attacked by India, Karzai replied: “Anybody that attacks Pakistan, Afghanistan will stand with Pakistan. Afghanistan will be a brother of Pakistan. Afghanistan will never betray a brother”.
Karzai’s comments came in the context of tense relations between Pakistan and the United States on the issue of action against the Haqqani network. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last days, said the United States does not intend to act unilaterally against groups like the Haqqani network, but also called on Pakistan to act in “a few days or weeks” to “squeeze” the faction of the Taliban.
If Karzai was asked what he would do if there is a war between Pakistan and India, he replied: “If Pakistan is attacked by anyone, and when people need help in Afghanistan Pakistan, Afghanistan is it with you.”
Karzai criticized the role of Pakistan after the assassination of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani and the envoy of peace. Afghan President himself said that the Taliban to move not in a position of a finger without the support Pakistan.
