Joe Paterno 84-year-old football coach is battling with lung cancer. His family disclosed hours after the announcement that the governing body for U.S. college sports is investigating a child sex-abuse scandal at Penn State University which costs the football coach his job.
Scott Paterno revealed in a statement that last weekend, Scott Paterno was diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.
The news came shortly after Penn State pointed out the NCAA would look into the school’s handling of a child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
Paterno was fired by the board of trustees on November 9 for failing to do more about an abuse allegation against Sandusky than report it to his superiors.
Paterno had initially announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, saying that the scandal was “one of the great sorrows of my life.
