Singapore: Controversy between President and Prime Minister

It is necessary that the President works within the boundaries, laid out in the Constitution of Singapore. The Presidency must not be a centre of power. If is to avoid confrontation.

The office of the people’s elected President must work with the government in a proper and correct manner in the interest of Singapore. This is important that both the offices will always be in a state of tension and the country will suffer. This is the hour that the matter should be set for the future relationship regarding the two offices especially in light of the current world economic climate.

The Minister of Law said that whether the PM listens to the President’s advice depends on the ‘quality of the advice’ and the ‘quality of the person’, whether the President is ‘wise, knowledgeable and experienced’. The President will deem to have the necessary qualities by virtue of his being issued the Certificate of Eligibility. This is further endorsed by the public of Singapore, which have voted for him. Is the Minister questioning the decision of the Presidential Elections Committee and the choice of the voters.

The Minister of Law set the phase of confrontation between the President and the PM when he went through the different levels of compliance for PM depending on who is elected president of the talks. He said the voters’ choice importance of Singapore? It is a very critical approach chosen for the office of the president by all Singaporeans. It is up to “I want to hear from you if you respect me and if I love you.” I hope this view is not shared by the PM.

This is not good for Singapore. It is on the wrong foot for selected candidates on how they want to see how the PM is going with him to tell. This is very serious because it creates a high degree of mistrust between the two. It was personally and in a bad light on the two institutions. When is the attitude of this kind inevitably to confrontation is not the president, but by non-cooperation by the government for power. Do we want?
